7/3 Raindelay..
Philip is probably bored. The only message was a photoshop picture and the txt:
RAIN :-(

6/3 from our testcrew in Istanbul!
Hi there!
The weather is still windy. But anyhow, we enjoy flying our perfects day by day, more and more. The air is still rough although the wind did slow down a bit today. Hopefully it will die within the next few days. We tried out varying CG-Positions but ended up at 107mm all the time again. I'm already wondering where David Hobby and Jan Kohout will fly their CG's on that plane for being known to be the ones who could manage flying their CG's on the trailing edge. Maybe less turbulent air is manageable with a more neutral CG-Position. With our favourised CG we figured out a first proper setup for all the important phases. You'll find the values in the graphics attached. The values for the flaps are measured on the inward end of the flap, the values for the ailerons on the outward end.

So all the best to the rest of the world, your PP-Testcrew:

5/5 from Philip
It was a long day of flying, with lovely but stormy weather. So there was still no possibility to check out the floating abilities of Pike Perfect. Nevertheless we use the time to get used to the handling of the model even more. The wind shows up blowing with some 10-12 m/s from the South. Pilots having experienced the wind direction at Riva airfield, know that besides the windpeed the air is fairly rough and turbulent with some harsh gusts. Although huge sink besides heavy thermals were characteristic for that day, the perfect was astonishingly smooth in flight. It's fun to work that dynamic air with this plane! There's no disadvantage noticeable to the usually flown smaller gliders.
With getting more and more used to the rough conditions, we tried to launched the plane harder and harder. First of all the 1.35mm lines gave up. By using thicker lines we figured out that we could reduce the launch flap settings for Pike perfect. Since it puts a lot of tension in the line even with less flaps set but now launching faster. We even could note a smooth bending in the wing due to that tough launches. The spar is built with stiff UMS-Carbon fibres, so if you can note bending you can be sure that this launch will be a powerful one. Whilst launching seems to be no difference to other planes, the zoom is a blast. No pitching or banking moment, just straight up – Some 2-3mm flaps up make that job an easy one. And above all, no swampy feeling in the elevator during hooking off with a lot of speed. The elevator pushrod of the Pike Perfect is installed different to other planes. When applying elevator up, the servo is pulling not pushing the rod. Thereby bending of the pushrod and thereby a swampy elevator is avoided. One only have to get used to the direct response of the elevator. In one of my launches I pulled hard which was followed by a recognisable loud, not good sounding “BRRRRRR”. Don't blame the flutter on the plane or the servos. It was just my way of servomounting that ripped all of the four wingservos off. No damage on the plane, just one hour more to spend in the workshop gluing the servo trays in with proper epoxyglue. So that was the abrupt end of the day for me. Fortunately Mustafa and Murat worked on trying to fix Landing settings. More of that soon......
All the best:
Philip

NEW 3/3 evening from Philip
Hi guys! We are still busy....
Today we fixed the first basic setup of the model. You will find the values of the throws which seem to prove comfortable attached (HERE). Tomorrows the weather forecast is lovely, so we want to go out with three Perfects for real intense flying and checking of suitable settings for launch, thermal and cruise. It is lovely to test these things here in Istanbul while the rest of good old Europe is still frozen. Lots of Thanks to Mustafa V. Koc and the guys from the SOARIST Club Istanbul for providing their airfield for early test flights and working hard by flying, fixing, soldering and catering :-). I'll keep you posted......

2/3-06 evening: from Philip
O.K. Guys, first day's done!
We had more wind today than expected, but nevertheless we went out to do the first flights on the Pike perfect.
We spent quite a long time on fixing a suitable CG for that weather and finally I was happy flying it on 107mm measured behind the Root sections leading edge.
The weather changed and it began to rain so we stopped after slightly getting used to the behaviour of the model. We didn't measure launches and logger altitudes yet, but after this first day of flying I can definitely say that this pretty thing looks promising. The control is amazing. Compared to the F3J gliders I've flown before the response of the aileron is astonishing and the response of the elevator is huge. The Drela tail-sections seem to work really fine here and all the pre installed throws needed to be reduced. I never had the feeling of handling a big model for Pike perfect doesn't show any slow reactions on control and is definitely not comparable to big Floaters although I hope that the sinkrate will be comparable to these planes.
Within the next days we try to fly as much as possible as long as the weather will allow this and will go out to measure some flights as well.

2/3-06: from Philip:
I just finished the first model yesterday and put some pictures in the attachment. Dealing to fix the model was very easy, nothing unexpected, just perfect work done by samba model. The plane looks really promising and whilst the weather down here looks quite promising too (we have some 15°C, partly cloudy skies and about 6m/s Wind) the first flights will take place in a few hours. I surely let you know how it went.
