Bovec F3J Eurotour 2010

Again Bovec was the last Eurotour of the year and what an ending!
7-8 pilots could snap the Eurotour title by getting good scores. So a big number of 118 pilots were entered and the tension was to be felt. Pilots came from North Cyprus in south (Eser Kismir), Finland/Norway in North (Tuomo Kokonen / Jojo) and Netherlands in the west. The weather was showing red alert all over the local weather forecast and that means heavy rain and floods. Those that came in early on Wedensday/Thursday did not get much flying done and on Friday many came and left because the camping area was flooded. Still many appeared on Saturday morning and a lively discussion followed at lunchtime if one should cancel or not. Some were afraid of the radios/safety and some really wanted to fly anyhow. A few hours of almsot flyable conditions made up most of the decision to get the entry fees and make up new matrixes with fewer pilots. 44 pilots entered and a jury was set up. First work for the jury was to sy go if the weather improved. Sadly no flying was done on Saturday so we set a start for 09:00 on Sunday.
Sunday we woke up to sunshine in the distance and clearing sky from the North. Wind was picking up from the south-east and people were talking about challenging rodeo-conditions. It certainly was difficult. First two rounds were predictable in the sense that if one had read the terrain and dared one could fly out to a small hill in the west with a river below that triggered a lot of thermals. The next two rounds was not as easy but those that flew active with heavy ballast could pick some good points by flying tactical left-right on the sky according to the air. We had already set that it was to be flown 4 preliminary rounds today. Most pilots used direct tow and heavy duty lines (1,4-1,7mm) and those that did not suffered from broken lines.
After 3 and 1/2 rounds most of the pilots had one or two bad rounds and it was almost certain that the winner would not get a full score. The battle of the first place in preliminaries was to be beetween Philip and Jojo that both carried 3000p and now flew against each other in difficult conditions. Jojo, NOR (Pike Perfect) flew longest with a 4:30 and 90p landing but relaunched as all the others had done so. Philip got only a 3:30 but a 98 landing while Jojo was greedy and got 4:02 but only a 45p landing. It was no certain that the pressure was up for Philip. If he could reach 1st or 2nd in the 2 finals he could take the overall Eurotour.
9 pilots flew 2 finals in what suddenly was calm and thermalling conditions. 6 of 9 pilots flew full time and in the end Marco Salvigni, ITA (flying Pike Perfect ET) won both finals and was at the top in front of Philip Kolb, GER and Stefan Bohlen, SUI.
6 of 9 pilots flew Pike Perfect / ET.
Junior winner at Bovec was Jan Littva jr. (Pike Perfect ET)
and winner of total Eurotour F3J 2010 junior was Jan Littva jr. (Pike Perfect ET)
Winner of the total senior Eurotour F3J 2010 became Philip Kolb, GER (Pike Perfect / Prestige)

A great weekend for those that had faith in the weather and it was a good decision to wait for the weather. Let us all hope the organizers will go again next year even with low entrance fees this year. We would strongly suggest that entry fees is collected saturday morning to ensure that organizers do not have problems with economy. The fee is only a tiny amount when looking at travelling and accomodation for a pilot.

Regards Jojo, Norway
